The Elmira Sugar Kings, which are poised to take the ice for the club’s 40th anniversary season, are looking for volunteers to host out-of-town players for the 2010-11 Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League campaign.
Marilyn Craig, a director with the Sugar Kings organization, said the team usually needs three or four billet families.
The Sugar Kings generally ice a squad that has a wealth of local talent, but the team rounds out its roster with players that must relocate from their hometowns.
Ryan Johnston of Sudbury and Michael Therrien of Smooth Rock Falls, which is north of Timmins, spent the season in Elmira last year, while Ethan Goldberg of Chicago played nine games before moving on.
Billet families are wanted from Elmira or the immediate area, which affords players a short drive to local schools — whether that’s high school or university.
Volunteers are reimbursed for the expenses incurred as billet hosts.
“The ones that are interested in hockey, they enjoy doing it and following the players,” said Craig.
Along with billet families, volunteers are also sought to serve in other capacities with the Junior hockey club.
“We’re also looking for new directors,” said Craig.
Ex-players are especially encouraged to get involved with the team as directors.
Anyone wanting more information about hosting a player, or serving on the board of directors, can contact Marilyn Craig at 519-669-8804.
