The Cambridge Winter Hawks won a rematch with the Elmira Sugar Kings at Woolwich Memorial Centre on Superbowl Sunday.
A week earlier, the Kings had out-lasted Cambridge in a 7-6 shootout win.
But this past Sunday, it was the Winter Hawks that came out on top in another high-scoring affair, with five goals to open the second period to take a commanding 8-1 lead en route to 9-5 victory.
It marked the second loss of the weekend for Elmira, which had fallen 5-1 at Stratford two nights earlier.
The Sugar Kings, who have six games remaining on the 2009-10 schedule, would play Cambridge in the first round of the playoffs if the season ended today.
Mike Sones stung the Kings for four goals on Sunday, while Jordan Benton, Brett Preistap, Nathan Albeson and Tanner Rutland also scored for Cambridge.
Elmira’s Michael Therrien, Riley Sonnenburg and Andrew Smith each scored and had an assist. Kody Ellis and Josh Woolley added goals, while Tyson LeBlanc (2), Brennon Pearce and Jake Jefferies chipped in with helpers.
Elmira was outshot 45-29 by Cambridge, which converted four of 12 power play opportunities.
Friday at Stratford, the Cullitons broke open a 2-1 lead early in the third period with three unanswered goals in a 5-1 win.
Ellis scored the lone goal for Elmira, assisted by Jarred Parent.
Stratford goal scorers were Jamie Nelson, Cohen Adair, Brock Reynolds, Kyle Wilhem and Craig Dalrymple.
The Cullitons, which are tied with Elmira for fifth place in the Midwestern Conference standings , outshot the Sugar Kings 46-21.
Up next, Elmira hosts Guelph on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
