The Elmira Sugar Kings picked up a win and a loss in weekend action, as Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play winds down for the holiday break.
Elmira lost 4-3 to Stratford in a battle of the Midwestern Conference’s top two teams, Friday, then rebounded with a 3-2 victory over Kitchener, Sunday.
At Stratford, a goal by Ray Huether 15 seconds into the third period snapped a 3-3 tie and sent the Cullitons to victory over Elmira.
The Sugar Kings, which outshot Stratford 46-27 on the night, got goals from Brady Campbell, Brett Priestap and Lukas Baleshta. Scott Nagy (2), Brad Kraus, Michael Hasson and Baleshta had assists.
Huether scored twice for Stratford, with singles to Brad McClure and Jake Ryan.
Nick Horrigan made 23 saves for Elmira, while Jesse Raymond turned aside 43 shots for Stratford.
Sunday afternoon at Elmira, Colton Wolfe-Sabo’s power-play goal with 5:55 to play broke a 2-2 and lifted the Sugar Kings to victory over Kitchener.
Campbell chipped in with a goal and an assist, Kraus scored short-handed and also had an assist, and Baleshta had a pair of helpers.
Clayton Greer and Cash Seraphim added assists.
KItchener goal scorers were John Divo and Eric Hammerl.
Justis Husak made 22 saves for the win.
Elmira outshot Kitchener 40-24.
The Sugar Kings, which played at Kitchener Tuesday night, don’t play again until after the holidays — Saturday, Jan 7 at Cambridge.
They return to home ice the following day.
