Sugar Kings earn trio of weekend wins

The Elmira Sugar Kings earned a trio of wins in as many games this past weekend, outscoring their opponents by a 16-4 margin in the process.
Two of those wins came against teams that are among the top four in the Midwestern Conference point standings.
The Sugar Kings record now sits at 25 wins, five losses and one overtime loss in 31 games.
Friday at Owen Sound, Elmira dumped the Greys 9-2.
Elmira led 3-0 after the first period and 7-1 after two periods of play.
Michael Hasson paced the offence with a goal and three assists, while five players had three points apiece.
Riley Sonnenburg and Brady Campbell both scored twice and added an assist; Brett Priestap and Andrew Smith each scored and had a pair of helpers; and Lukas Baleshta had three assists.
Mitch Dunning also scored and added an assist; Will Cook rounded out the scoring; and Patrick McKelvie (2) and Cass Frey added helpers.
Owen Sound goal scorers were Jordan Cale and Kyle Shaw.
Justis Husak made 25 saves for the victory.
Saturday at Brantford, Elmira clipped Brantford 2-1 in a penalty-filled game that included a number of player ejections and 119 minutes handed out in penalties.
Smith scored from Baleshta 52 seconds into the first period to give Elmira a 1-0 lead. Hasson’s goal, from Sonnenburg and Wade Pfeffer mid-way through the second period stood up to be the game winner.
Ryan Blunt scored early in the third period for Brantford. It was the only puck to get past Elmira’s Nick Horrigan, who stopped 38 of 39 shots.
Sunday in Elmira, the Sugar Kings broke open a one-goal game with three third-period goals en route to a 5-1 win over Cambridge.
Priestap scored twice and added an assist for Elmira; Campbell, Sonnenburg and Smith each had a goal and an assist; and Cook, Hasson and Baleshta had two assists apiece.
Ryan Clarke scored for the Winter Hawks.
Horrigan stopped 38 of 39 shots for the second straight game to earn the victory.
The game was the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss, with a total of 420 stuffed animals being donated by fans.
The Sugar Kings are back in action Friday at Stratford. They are back on home ice Sunday to host Kitchener at 2 p.m. The Kings will be holding their annual Skate with the Kings following the game, giving local fans the opportunity to chat with and skate with the Sugar Kings.
