Eric Schwindt has added his name to the growing list of local residents vying for a seat on municipal council.
Schwindt, 38, who is a lifelong Woolwich resident, is vying for a seat in Ward 2.
The announcement ensures that no candidates will be acclaimed on Woolwich council in October's municipal election.
Schwindt indicated the need for fresh ideas is the reason he filed nomination papers.
“We are in a new reality today, and need to manage our finances accordingly” stated Schwindt.
He said it is a major concern and reason for entering the race.
“As citizens and taxpayers of Woolwich, we need our Township to use our tax dollars more efficiently. And that responsibility lies with Council”.
Schwindt is vying for the Ward 2 seat currently held by Mark Bauman.
Schwindt resides on a farm north of Elmira, along with his wife Stephanie. The couple has three daughters.
He currently serves as president of the Waterloo County Pork Producers Association, and is also secretary of the Ontario Pork Industry Council and a director on the Ontario Swine Health Advisory Board.
Schwindt indicated that he has experience managing a small business, "achieving goals within budget and without breaking the bank."
When a decision to spend $5,000 on a consultant to give a recommendation on remuneration, Schwindt said he asked why township staff couldn't make a few phone calls and obtain essentially the same information, given the current economic conditions.
"There is a sense in the community that we need to approach things differently," stated Schwindt. "This fall is our chance to debate new ideas and chart a new course."
He said he welcomes the opportunity to be part of that process.
Those looking to run for a seat in the municipal election have until Friday, Sept 10 at 2 p.m. to file nomination papers.
