Christmas spirit is alive and well.

For every “bah, humbug,” we can hear at this time of year, from those who find Christmas a burden, instead of a joy, there are far more who know how to embrace the Christmas spirit.

That spirit is at work, for instance, in the annual Christmas Goodwill Program.

It seems like almost everybody in the community contributes in some way to this program — whether it is a local church or Christmas party that chooses to benefit the program, or local schoolchildren donating cans of food through their school’s food drive.

Then there are the volunteers, approximately 250 men, women and children who take time out of their busy schedules to purchase items for the program, wrap gifts, or sort through cans of food, all to benefit someone other than themselves.

There are approximately 95 families that will benefit from the program this year, reminding us of just how deep the need is.

For anyone who hasn’t had the chance to visit Lions Hall in the week prior to Christmas, it is well worth a visit.

There is something humbling about seeing rows upon rows of toys — all brand-name items — that have been donated, so that boys and girls throughout the township can have a merry Christmas, even if their parents have lost their jobs, or simply can’t make ends meet.

There is something beautiful, as well, in seeing the many volunteers cheerfully wrapping presents, while singing Christmas carols.

These are the people who get Christmas, who understand what it is about.

It’s not really about all the hoopla that surrounds the day. Decorating the perfect tree, serving the perfect meal, and buying the perfect gift are all overrated.

What is beautiful and wonderful about the season is that, for some at least, it’s a time to think about others.

We take the time to stop whining and complaining about what’s wrong with our own lives, and start thinking about making someone else’s life better.

It’s a tremendous thing, to get our minds off ourselves. We don’t do it nearly enough, in fact.

There would be something special, indeed, if we could capture this spirit, and make it more a part of everyday life.

Put that on our wish list for 2010.
