Buggy collision claims life of 11-year-old

Funeral services are being held today for a young boy killed in a buggy collision on Friday.?Eleven-year-old Landis Martin died as a result of injuries sustained when the buggy in which he was a passenger was hit from behind by a pickup truck.?The collision occurred on Sideroad 7 West, nearly two kilometers west of Concession 7 in Wellington North, shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 13.?County of Wellington OPP officers say that 19-year-old Benjamin Peters of RR3, Conn was eastbound on Sideroad 7, driving a 2000 Dodge pickup. Peters did not see the horse and buggy ahead and struck the rear of the buggy, ejecting the three occupants.?Neither Peters nor the 16-year-old male truck passenger from Moorefield were injured in the collision.?The buggy was being driven by a 15-year-old-boy from RR 1, Kenilworth. Accompanying him were his 12-year-old and 11-year-old younger brothers. ?All three were taken to Louise Marshall Hospital in Mount Forest and the youngest transferred to McMaster Hospital in Hamilton with major injuries. At about 6:26 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, Landis Martin succumbed to his injuries. ?County of Wellington OPP officers continue to investigate and report that the two older boys, injured in the crash, are listed with non-life threatening injuries.?Members of the County of Wellington OPP Traffic Management Unit and West Region OPP Technical Collision Investigators attended to assist with the investigation.?The three boys are the sons of David B. and Rebecca Martin of RR 2, Kenilworth and grandsons of Samuel and Melvina Martin of Elmira and Elam H. and Salome Martin of Heidelberg. ?Services will begin at the family home today (Wednesday, Jan. 18). at 9 a.m., continuing at Farewell Mennonite Church with burial at Farewell Mennonite Cemetery.
