Elmira Independent - Seniors apartments a go
Seniors in Elmira will soon have a new place to call home, after Woolwich councillors readily approved a new seniors apartment complex for the downtown core.
The proposal was put before council a few months ago by Cameo Homes. Architect Brian L. Shantz presented the plan, which will allow the 20-unit apartment building at 30 and 32 Church St. W.
At that meeting, several area seniors appeared in support of the application, as well as Mary Jordan, who coordinates the programs at the Woolwich Seniors Centre.
“Please keep in mind this project is only a start for Elmira, and the waiting list will continue to grow,” said Jordan, at the June 15 meeting.
Director of planning and engineering Dan Kennaley told councillors that staff was supportive of the application, which fits in well with provincial and regional policies that encourage intensification of urban areas.
Kennaley, at the Aug. 24 committee-of-the-whole meeting, noted that the only concerns that had been raised had been by a neighbouring business owner, which was concerned about the impact lighting at her business would have on the seniors’ residences.
That issue has been dealt with through the establishment of a privacy fence along the north and west sides of the building.
“We believe that these are not serious enough (issues) to suggest that this application not proceed.”
Councillors had no concerns about the apartment complex, and readily approved the recommendation.
Cameo Homes intends to begin work this fall, and hope to have the apartments completed by summer 2011.
