Dec. 17, 2004 — It was a recording-breaking year for construction in Woolwich Township in 2004, with more than $75.6 million worth of building permits issued through the end of November.
• Local sculptor Tim Schmalz was working on memorial for fallen firefighters, commissioned in honour of Capt. Charles Kieswetter, one of the first firefighters in the region to be killed in the line of duty.

Dec. 17, 1999 — It was reported that Wellesley, Linwood and St. Jacobs public schools would get much-needed expansions in time to start the 2000-01 school year.
• The annual Elmira Sugar Kings’ fashion show featured two celebrity models, local TV personalities Crista Mechlinski and Brent Hanson from CKCO.

Dec. 19, 1989 —Elmira district high school staged a production of Les Miserables under the direction of Gord Davis, who effectively used a multi-level stage for what was deemed a bold, successful performance.
• The Elmira Sugar Kings scored nine power-play goals in a 12-3 win over the Brantford Classics, a sign that the 4th-place team was gelling and set to live up to its potential.

Dec. 18, 1979 —Woolwich planning committee approved an application from Home Hardware’s head office in St. Jacobs for a zone change and official plan amendment, to enable the company to expand its warehouse facilities.
• Dean Oberle scored six times to up his season goal total to 34 as the Elmira Sugar Kings cruised to a 7-4 home-ice win over the Kitchener Ranger Bs.

Dec.r 18, 1974 — A cultural basketball sports exchange was marred by un-sportsmanship, as McDonald high school from St. Anne de Bellevue, Quebec ran up the score against host Elmira. After losing 73-23, the overmatched senior Lancerettes trailed 50-4 at halftime in the second game en route to a 105-11 defeat.
• Two members of the Elmira high school’s drama festival entry won awards. Rita Huschka was named best actress, while Ann Morden won a special merit award.
